'Cruising' at 27: Heat, humidity, human sweat

Cruising, the politically incorrect gay S&M whodunit, still holds up -- 27 years after its first showing, the New York Times says today on the occasion of the film's re-release on DVD: "Al Pacino, still wreathed in the saintly idealism of Serpico, plays Steve Burns, a rookie cop who, in exchange for a fast-lane promotion, agrees to go undercover in the S&M bars of the meatpacking district in search of a psycho preying on gay men.

"Like all good noir heroes," the review continues, "he finds himself drawn to the killer he is tracking, an effect registered by [director William] Friedkin's deft use of tracking shots tied to Burns’s point of view. ("I like to watch," he says at one point.) The bars are portrayed as a kind of hell, photographed in a near-monochromatic black-and-blue color scheme [see photo, above], with an emphasis on heat, humidity, human sweat and sulfuric cigarette smoke. Though some scenes were fogged up to avoid censorship for the initial release, they are now presented as Mr. Friedkin shot them."

I remember two things about Cruising from when I crossed picket lines to see it back in 1980: It was way violent. And there was a molto-hot scene where Pacino's character fucks his wife (maybe it was a girlfriend) like there was no tomorrow.

Arnie veto expected; plus, a new office sweet

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to veto the latest same-sex marriage bill approved by the state legislature, the San Francisco Chronicle says today. Those naughty boys at business-attire-themed porn producer Men at Play have released their newest waggishly-titled concoction, KamaSuitra Gold (left). Smack down! Chris Crocker, the over-the-top, 19-year-old way-fey Britney Spears fan, goes after Fox News in a new YouTube video: "Mention me again and there will be a problem, Fox News." Crocker's original video screed attacking Spears' critics continues to climb YouTube's charts. Meanwhile, oldie and definitely moldy disco group The Village People plans to sue YouTube over a video featuring Hitler and a coterie of prominent Nazis singing YMCA.

And now: Britney's most vocal defender

Salon has an excellent Q&A with the 19-year-old gay guy who made the Leave Britney Alone! video that's now become the 48-hour-cycle's surprise YouTube hit.

Penn plays Milk; Becks fights, Phillippe ages

Sean Penn will play gay 1970s San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, and Matt Damon his assassin, in a long-planned movie by director Gus Van Sant; filming could start in December. Soccer god David Beckham, worried about losing his gay fans, says Britain's Daily Star, denies he called an ex-teammate a "poof." Plus, major cutie-pie Ryan Phillippe (left), now being thrown overboard by his clearly insane soon-to-be ex-wife Reese Witherspoon, turns 33 today; more big birthdays here.

A Brooklyn fireman with a really huge hose

I may be the last gay man on the planet to find this story, so forgive me. First, the NSFW background: I watched a very sexy video last year of a guy showing off his huge cock to a group of women, videotaping him with his knowledge for a tape that wound up in the Guys Gone Wild series. But the story about Michael Biserta got better earlier this month.

It turns out that Biserta is a 22-year-old Brooklyn fireman who's the cover boy (above) for the 2008 version of the New York Fire Department's super-popular annual shirtless hunk charity calendar. Now, citing bad press over over Biserta's tape, the department is banning all future calendars. Such bad sports!

Diana, at 10; Craig resigning? Craig marrying!

Millions of folks worldwide are asking "Where were you when" today amid the 10th anniversary of the death of pop Princess Diana of Wales (left, top). (I was in a Chicago bathhouse, natch!) We're all grateful her son, Prince William, 25 (left, middle), second in line to the British throne, doesn't look like his dad. Across the pond, meanwhile, Idaho Sen. Larry "Wide Stance" Craig (left, bottom) is considering resigning as pressure builds over his guilty plea from charges he solicited sex from an undercover cop in a men's toilet at Minneapolis' airport. Breaking my heart, James Bond star Daniel Craig has gotten engaged to a film producer -- and she's a she! An Iowa judge struck down the state's decade-old gay marriage ban, saying it violated constitutional rights of due process and equal protection. Plus, actor and Mayflower descendant Richard Gere turns 58 today; more big birthdays here.

On anniversary, 'Querelle' pushes envelope

Australian gay guy's glossy DNA observes the 25th anniversary of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Querelle, "without doubt one of the most envelope-pushing gay films of all time,'' the editors say in the magazine's new issue. 'Course, star Brad Davis (above) was even more smoking-hot four years earlier in Midnight Express. Arkansas buds claimed to have seen him scootin' boot at Discovery when I was living in Little Rock and Davis was filming the hilarious 1989 comedy Rosalie Goes Shopping in nearby Stuttgart. (Davis, an IV drug user, had AIDS when he committed suicide with a drug overdose in 1991.) Plus, in the same DNA issue, reader results from the annual Sexiest Men Alive contest.

Leading B.A.R.: Karr's sex-change of heart

Briefs: recalling Booth; toilet cruising 101

Shirley Booth, Oscar's Best Actress in 1953 for playing the wife of an alcoholic chiropractor in Come Back, Little Sheba, was born 109 years ago today; she died in 1992. The poignantly five-hankie Sheba is on the required viewing list at Faggot Finishing School. (Booth was best known for starring in the TV series Hazel.) Plus, ABC leverages the Sen. Larry "Wide Stance" Craig scandal by offering a toe-tapping primer on picking up men in toilets. So academic! "Over time," people familiar with cruising told ABCNEWS.com, "gay men began using a codified system of signals to indicate to others that they were interested in sex."

Montreal pride; Arnie aging, 'Simpsons' rules

You go, sexy French Canadians! More than 50,000 people turned out yesterday for Montreal's first daytime gay-pride parade since 2004, organizers said, a bigger turnout than the 30,000 originally forecast. Very randy Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (left) turns 60 today; more big birthdays here. (It was pretty hot stuff years ago to see Schwarzenegger tell Johnny Carson that he'd taken up bodybuilding as a teenager after looking in the mirror and seeing one part of him was much bigger than the rest.) Chain-smoking TV talk-show host Tom Snyder, 71, died in San Francisco yesterday of leukemia; he lived in Tiburon. The Simpsons Movie grabbed top billing at the box office in its opening weekend, knocking aside bad gayish comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. [Photo: Robert Mapplethorpe]

Soldier porn; Spacey older, Vance still dead

A Fort Bragg soldier is getting the boot after admitting he performed in a video on military-themed gay porn site Active Duty. (That isn't him, left; the soldier wasn't identified). Meanwhile, Kevin Spacey, who isn't a soldier but might be gay, turns 48 today. And Vivian Vance, who played Ricky and Lucy Ricardo's nosy neighbor, would celebrate her 98th birthday today -- if she hadn't kicked the bucket in 1979. (Memo to Sparky: Remove Vance from X-mas card list!)

Department of No Accounting for Taste

The universally-panned I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry debuted as the weekend's top movie, besting even Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. (Box-office estimates are so close, final rankings may shift tomorrow.)

How could 'Chuck & Larry' bomb?!

I mean, Adam Sandler is such a dreamboat! Who wouldn't want to see him get busy with Kevin James? And yet, Defamer says, the world's awful film critics have completely missed those attractions in the new I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

"This homo pronounces Hollywood totally chickenshit,'' says a TimeOut New York review on Rotten Tomatoes. "What’s worse: a film that engages in fag jokes for two hours or one that does it only for the first half, devoting its remaining time to promoting the limpest liberalism?"

Cruise is a hipster, and it's no model life

Tom Cruise isn't hippy enough already, so he's chosen a new role where he dresses in jodhpurs as Nazi Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg for Rubicon, a movie based on the real-life German officer’s attempt to assassinate Hitler. Increasingly strange-looking former 'N Sync singer Lance Bass and his tasty new Brazilian boyfriend -- model and actor Pedro Andrade -- ran interference for Justin Timberlake so he could escape paparazzi at the opening of his New York City restaurant, Southern Hospitality. Oooh! Model bookers are so mean: In this LX.tv video, Pedro is threatened with deportation for showing up late for a shoot!

My kind of workplace harrassment

Most gay porn producers crank out videos set in garages, bars, ranches and other rough-and-tumble settings. But Britain's Men At Play specializes in the office, showing us hunky bosses in pin-stripe suits and their equally hot subordinates. (Gee, the word subordinate has a whole new meaning!) Take Spank 2, starring Carlos Caballero (hah! that name!) as the tyrant boss and Franko Dominicci (hah again!) as the eager-beaver worker. (Guess Franko's looking, above, for a paper clip lost in the boss' lap. Or not.) From the video's synopsis: "After scaring off one assistant, (Carlos) finds himself having to conduct interviews to find a suitable replacement. But with a reputation that is well known throughout the city, Carlos' candidates are hardly flying in, except for a young and ambitious Franko who has no idea what lies in store for him."

Want even more suits? Check out Business Affairs, a coffee-table book with an office-sweet theme co-produced by Men At Play.

New in Flicks and Tunes: Moulin Rouge

I've just loaded three tracks into the jukebox, plus related video in the movie player; sidebar, right. The 2001 film was kind of one big mashup: modern music mixed with an old story line, Puccini's La bohème. Its director and writer, Baz Luhrmann, also wrote and directed another favorite of mine: 1992's hilarious Strictly Ballroom. Want more Moulin Rouge? Here's the trailer:

On the kindness of strangers

People usually associate Vivien Leigh (above, in 1958) with Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche DuBois. But I gravitate to her gayest character, in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. Warren Beatty is downright silly (that terrible Italian accent!) as the gigolo who preys on Karen Stone, an aging American stage actress who flees to Rome after her career sputters and her new husband dies. (A 2003 remake starring Helen Mirren, Ann Bancroft and the smoking-hot Olivier Martinez, below, is a no-miss, too.)

Leigh, who suffered major bouts of manic-depression, is spot-on in that 1961 movie. The scene I always recall comes near the end, when her character succumbs to desperate loneliness. She's on the terrace of her Spanish Steps appartamento, tossing the keys below to another young n'er-do-well, despite a dark hint he may kill her. I thought about Leigh last night, when Sparky and I caught the tail end of A Streetcar Named Desire. Then I read her Wiki bio this morning and discovered she died exactly 40 years ago today, of tuberculosis. She was only 54.

Of course, Streetcar has a big point in its favor, and here he is:

Rats galore; finding 'Brazilians,' King's b-day

Pixar's adorable-looking Ratatouille, opening tonight, is drawing rave reviews this morning. "The animation is astonishing,'' says the Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern. Need a Brazilian in San Francisco? Don't we all! Of course, I'm talking about a super-close shave; urban travel guide Gridskipper points the way. Plus, disco diva Evelyn "Champagne" King turns 47 today; more big birthdays here. Foodie-centric Ratatouille is very much a product of Northern California. "For six years, members of Pixar Animation Studios took classes at Bay Area cooking schools and channeled the artistry of Thomas Keller, the chef/owner of Napa Valley's critically acclaimed French Laundry restaurant,'' the San Francisco Chronicle says. Want more? Here are some clips:

We have a winner

"The best campaign spot we’ve seen this season!"

-- Kate Phillips, the New York Times

Punditoids are talking about the new Hillary Clinton spot, teasing supporters (and opponents) about her choice of a campaign theme song. The video -- a riff on the final episode of The Sopranos -- shows the Clintons really can act, and be funny. But can they win? I've had a couple close encounters with the Bill & Hillary Show from my days living in Arkansas. For heaven's sake, not that close! (Of course, the last time we saw each other, he was giving me a big old "Hello!" and looking straight into my eyes in a very friendly way.)
