Yet more evidence bears are lazy

This shocking surveillance video confirms what a friend wrote about hairy gay men during Provincetown's bear week this past July:

Tonight: Bears like pecs, too!

Bear Week wouldn't be the same if I didn't mention that a celebration of man bosoms leads tonight's fun:
  • Powerhouse: Pecs night! That means cheap booze for guys who don't wear shirts. When: 10 p.m. Where: 1347 Folsom St., between 9th and 10th.

  • SF Badlands: What's not to love about happy hour? When: 3-8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Where: 4121 18th St., near Castro.

  • The Endup: Fag Friday. Contemporary house music for young hipsters. Guest DJ Angel Moraes; Midnight Madness Shows: Candi Gurl. Resident DJs: Rolo, David Harness, Pete Avila and Neon Leon. When: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Where: 401 6th St., at Harrison.

  • The Cafe: Boy Bar's all about high testosterone, low attitude and tight jock straps. When: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. $3 cover. Where: 2369 Market St.

Tonight: Bear Week's finger-licking fun

And it's all leading to Sunday's Hairrison Street Fair. Next up: tonight's Krispy Kreme Party. From the Hairrison website: "A party Homer Simpson would love! Donuts and bears, dooh! Krispy Kreme is sponsoring this match made in heaven, so expect donut-flavored drink specials, Krispy Kreme shwag and hot men passing around trays of glazed. The 'Hot Now' sign is on." When: 9 to midnight, at the Lone Star, 1354 Harrison St. Cost: $8 beer bust, $4 with Charity Bear Tag.
San Francisco's weather this Labor Day weekend is expected to be fabulous, starting with today's, the warmest. It'll be sunny, with highs into the lower 80s. Saturday through Monday, it's supposed to be sunny too, though temperatures aren't supposed to rise higher than the lower 70s. All this is great news for folks planning to attend Sunday's big Hairrison bear street fair.

Andrew Sullivan's soon-to-be husbear

I'm not sure who the conservative-ish writer is marrying this week. But if it's the stunningly tall ("altitudinous," Gawker says), gorgeous and molto-hairy guy I saw Sullivan clambering all over at P-town's Wired Puppy earlier this month, all I can say is: Mazltov! Hang on to this one; he's a keeper.

Leading B.A.R.: Russian bears and alley cats

What I'm reading this morning in our little weekly: COPS HUNTING. Police have resumed their search for suspects in a June attack on two gay man where one was stabbed on 19th Street. BARE BEARS: Thousands of big hairy gay guys converge on the Russian River's Guerneville for Lazy Bear Weekend. HALLOWEEN TROUBLE? Efforts to move the violence-scarred Halloween night street party from the Castro to the waterfront took a hit when pop singer Pink pulled out of the event. KARRNAL KNOWLEDGE: Exploring the guilty pleasures of swallowing in Muscle Pit, where the actors "like men, period." MISTER MARCUS staggers across the finish line with an Up Your Alley roundup. More Yogi, less 'bears gone wild'

Recovering conservative Andrew Sullivan's meditation on bears is still a nice read -- especially now, as the hairy things lumber about Provincetown, where Sullivan often summers. "They're cheerful,'' he wrote in Salon back in 2003. "They don't give a shit what others think of them; they're more overtly social than sexual; they drink rather than do drugs; they seem, on the whole, older and far more grown-up than their party-boy cousins. They eat and drink and joke and cuddle and stroke and generally have a great time."

Dateline P-Town: Bears lazy, avoid beach

Castro Confidential telexes its far-flung correspondents for Social Notes from All Over. Today, a friend writes from Cape Cod, where he's on a Bear Week holiday:

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. -- It's been a typical P-town week: A lot of sun, a little rain, a lot of men, a little bit of sexual compulsion. Oh, and biking the paths, strolling naked on the beach, and seeing Varla Jean Merman simultaneously sing and eat Cheez Whiz.

It's a bit odd to see P-town taken over by bears. And they have really taken over. Even though in past years we've been in town during "family week," I don't recall the gay scene ever being so dominated. The crowd at Spiritus at night is overwhelmingly furry, with the full gamut of bear "types" from sleek otters to studly muscle bears and some big fat bears, as well. And everything in between.

Bears, although friendly, are also lazy. More stick to town, with fewer on the bike trails, and fewer making the trek across the estuary to the nude beach (which is more deserted this year than in previous years). Also, at Tea there is a great amount of alcohol consumed on the deck, but the dance floor is empty until very late, and never really gets jammed. Oh, and finally: Dick Dock is quite popular. P-town, despite my great fears, remains P-town. The ritual continues.

The biggest change was the extension of Tea from a 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. close some years ago. That continues to complicate "after-t" and dinner. Guys still get to the A-House or the Crown & Anchor at 11, and mill around for two hours until the 1 a.m. close. The leather dance last night at the Paramount (in the Crown) had a huge and very active back room that I only noticed at 12:30 a.m. So, OK, some things have changed. But the light, the art, the schlock: It's all still here. Still, where are the lesbians? Oh, and Clem and Ursies is not what it used to be. Sigh. Relatively expensive and underwhelming.

There'll always be an England

San Francisco bears rub shoulders and hairy pecs tonight with their British counterparts, Diddy and Daz, producers of Saturday's Mega Woof! What: Meat and Greet to get Brit-style blotto (as Ggreg Taylor puts it). Where: 440 Castro St. When: 7 p.m.
